Day 9
~ by Sally Stuart ~
Even in the United States we have only recently come to understand kids on the autism spectrum and their unique abilities and needs. In Rwanda the general public has no understanding of children with autism and the LWA mothers of these children report that they are feared, harassed, beaten up and chased away by both children and adults who do not understand their often erratic behavior.
LWA is way ahead of the curve in this area! They have several children living with autism at each of their centers and understand their unique needs. Within the safe walled compound of LWA these kids are free to attend Good Shepherd Academy with understanding teachers, roam the compound where therapists and other staff all extend love to them, and have space to run and play freely without fear. Brian Impano is one of the autistic children we visited in his home. His mother Beatrice talked about the change since they have been coming to LWA. Prior to LWA Brian would stay awake and active all night long – she never could really sleep at night. She was exhausted. Thanks to medications provided by LWA Brian now has a good sleep-wake cycle and both he and momma are getting rest each night. Brian was also incontinent when he came to LWA and thanks to therapists he has now learned to let people know when he needs to use the bathroom. Imagine what a change that is his mom now that he is 10 years old.
Beatrice beamed as she described what being at LWA means to Brian. He wakes up every day asking if this is a day they will go the LWA. Five days a week the answer is yes! He is delighted because he know that once he enters those gates he will finally be safe and loved. He will be free from harassment and abuse. He will finally have friends. He absolutely loves it there. Supporting Love With Action gives so much hope to kids like Brian and their mothers. Thank you!

Another beautiful story of how LWA changes the lives of so many
Thank you, Sally, for sharing. I’m so grateful for the safe have of LWA.
I have been praying regularly for the team, and the wonderful people you have met, like Brian.
Glad to see autism being recognized and treated.
Sally, It is so inspiring to hear about the autism attitude in Rwanda starting to change. It is a long process but one step at a time for one person at a time is huge! Especially for that person, like Brian. Thank you for sharing and enlightening such things to happen.
